Florida Doctor is Recruiting Participants for Groundbreaking Research in Hair Transplant Surgery

A local hair transplant doctor is starting a novel research study to bring to the field of hair transplantation a method of addressing surgical scars that is already used in other reconstructive and aesthetic surgeries.

Dr. Marco Barusco, a hair transplant surgeon with over 12 years of experience, wants to determine if BellaDerm® - a natural dermal graft - will improve the appearance of the scalp of hair transplant patients. BellaDerm® is donated human skin that is processed to remove both epidermal and dermal cells. What remains is a tissue matrix capable of natural and full regeneration of cells and blood vessels after it is implanted.

This research is being supported by the Musculoskeletal Transplant Foundation (MTF) (www.mtf.org), the largest not-for-profit tissue bank in the U.S. and manufacturer of BellaDerm. The project was reviewed and approved by an independent Institutional Review Board (IRB) that is not associated with Tempus Hair Restoration or MTF.

Latisse for your dome? Eyelash enhancer also thickens thin hair

The drug, which in its earliest, unsexiest incarnation existed solely as a glaucoma treatment, is best known as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved wonder drug that can grow and darken your poor listless lashes . Now, it's being tested for a new use: growing hair on your dome.

No one tracks just how many doctors across the country are using Latisse off-label to target hair loss, but Dr. Alan Bauman, a Boca Raton, Fla., board-certified hair restoration physician has been using the drug this way for about three years, beginning around the time the FDA approved it for eyelash growth in December 2008. He describes his own personal "eureka!" moment:

"Patients who were using it for eyelashes sometimes have eyebrow problems, so it’s a short hop to the eyebrows," he explains. "So, of course, if it was working there, too from the eyebrows, it’s just a short hop to the hairline."

Allergen, the health care company that manufactures the eyelash enhancer, is currently testing the safety and efficacy of a new formulation of bimatoprost, the active pharmaceutical ingredient in Latisse, in growing hair on the scalp, says Heather Katt, a spokeswoman for Allergen.

The appeal of using Latisse for hair loss is its ease and convenience, as it seems to only require one drop to the affected area once a day; minoxidil (better known as Rogaine) requires two, and Propecia requires daily pill taking.

Bauman says he sees about 1,000 new hair loss patients each year, about 700 of which end up on some kind of medical management and so far, he's only used Latisse on a "couple dozen" patients, usually those who are allergic to the usual treatments, which is what happened to 70-year-old Rhoda Kelly.

Winter weather damaging your hair

Iain Sallis, one of only a handful of trichologists in the country, is extending his reach to those with hair and scalp problems across the UK this month as he talks about the effects the winter weather has on your hair and just how you can deal with it (Including a homemade formula with eggs and yoghurt!)

Winter months have a double impact on the hair - firstly and most obviously the weather is very cold and dry, as our hair cannot ‘react’ and tell us how dry it is becoming (like the skin can) we have to find out by how it feels and how it reacts.

If you think of how dry and chapped your lips can become, you can now imagine how dry your hair can become before you actually ‘feel’ that it’s been affected.

But there is an equally damaging process going on in the winter months...the cold weather does have a drying effect on the hair, not to mention the damp weather making styles last less time, but the main problems is actually man made.

Analysis of Results of Safety and Efficacy of the HairMax LaserComb

An analysis undertaken to assess the safety and efficacy of the HairMax LaserComb from 6 double blind clinical studies with 460 subjects found that no serious side effects occurred in any of these studies which proved the efficacy of the device in treating androgenetic alopecia (hereditary hair loss) in men and women.

This analysis combined with the fact that there have never been any reports of serious side effects occurring in the over 10 years the HairMax has been on the market, demonstrates that the HairMax LaserComb has an excellent risk to benefit profile.

Treating hereditary hair loss in men and women requires serious considerations regarding not only efficacy, but safety. Lexington Int'l has recently completed an analysis of the efficacy and safety of the HairMax LaserComb in 6 double-blind, device clinical trials of androgenetic alopecia with 460 male and female subjects.

Hair Restoration Procedures Appear to Be Gaining Popularity Among Younger Men

More and more younger men seem to be inquiring about solutions for hair loss -- an indication that they're more aggressive about addressing the issue now, rather than wait, according to a highly respected doctor in the field of hair transplants.

The popular online physician referral service LocateADoc.com recently interviewed Dr. Michael Zufelt, who practices at the Hair Restoration Center of Utah. The hair restoration specialist says an increasing number of his patients are younger men.

"I'm not sure there is a trend of younger people losing hair, but certainly younger males are seeking preventative and proactive approaches to hair loss than we have seen in years past," Zufelt tells LocateADoc.com.

According to the American Hair Loss Association, the number of younger hair loss patients is rising. By the age of 35, two-thirds of American men will experience some degree of appreciable hair loss, studies indicate. According to the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery, of those undergoing the procedure in recent years, over half of male patients were between the ages of 30 to 49.

Hair Transplant Pioneer To Use Robotic ARTAS System For FUE Hair Transplantation

Robert M. Bernstein, M.D., F.A.A.D., world-renowned pioneer of the Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) hair transplant techniques and founder of Bernstein Medical - Center for Hair Restoration, will become the first hair transplant surgeon on the East Coast to use the robotic ARTAS System for Hair Restoration.

Dr. Bernstein, a Clinical Professor of Dermatology at Columbia University in New York, said that he is excited to incorporate the image-guided robotic system into his FUE procedures. "The ARTAS System is a ground-breaking technology for hair transplantation that will provide significant benefits to our patients," said Dr. Bernstein. "From the accuracy of follicular unit graft extraction to the automation of what is normally a labor and skill intensive procedure, the outcome is better hair restoration results and faster, more comfortable procedures."
Free Wigs for Children With Hair Loss

A New York City celebrity hairstylist and wig designer said his dream to provide wigs for children with medical hair loss is coming true.

Andrew DiSimone, who has been an American Cancer Society volunteer for the last three years, launched the nonprofit FreeWigsForKids.org six months ago. The ACS has had a free wig program for women, but DiSimone is determined to help boost the self-esteem of children.

DiSimone, owner of FaceSalon in Manhattan, says children who experience hair loss don’t fully understand what’s going on." Many children see a wig as another accessory, which helps them look and feel good, he says.

DiSimone adds that, as children get older, they become more conscious of their appearance, and are singled out as being different from other kids.

Aderans Research reached a major milestone in its hair restoration studies recently when the company enrolled its 300th subject in Phase 2 of its clinical trial. With a goal of at least 350 subjects, Aderans is well on its way to expanding industry knowledge about cell-based engineering solutions for pattern hair loss.

We will continue to evaluate various combinations of the Ji Gami cell family in clinical treatment regimens, said Chief Executive Officer Ken Washenik, M.D., Ph.D.

The results are very encouraging thus far, and we’re on course to finish Phase 2 next year, added Vern Liebmann, Chief Operating Officer.

Launched in November 2008, Phase 2 is being conducted across the United States and is open to select individuals who suffer from androgenetic alopecia. Aderans continues to recruit subjects; visit http://www.aderansresearch.com/ari_clinicupdates.html for current locations.

Hair Loss Control Clinic giving back through contest

The Hair Loss Control Clinic in Latham has been helping people to regrow hair since its inception 25 years ago. Now they are looking to give back to community that has made them a success by hosting a "Tell Us Your Alopecia Story" contest. The winners will be awarded six months of treatment free of charge.

Hair Loss Control Clinic President and owner William Blatter says that he is excited to offer this opportunity to people in the community. "We have been very fortunate and wanted to find a way to give back. I understand how devastating it can be, particularly living with Alopecia Areata," he said. "We wanted to put a contest together where we could help people be able to get treatment without having to pay for it. We also wanted people to also be able tell their story because hair loss is such a difficult thing."

Blatter says that he and his staff will choose two winners to receive valuable treatment. "We are going to select two people and they will get a prize valued between $1,500 and $2,000. They will get a six-month treatment program that will include laser treatments and all of the products and check-ups that they need," he said. "The deadline is September 30 and it is free to enter. They can go to our website to enter or they can mail the form or drop it off here. We encourage readers to let other people know too. They can also enter their friends or family member themselves, if they have alopecia."

Hair Direct, an online hair replacement company, recently concluded a successful month-long fundraising and awareness drive to benefit The National Alopecia Areata Awareness Foundation (NAAF). The fundraising campaign raised over $2,400 and coincided with Alopecia Areata Awareness Month, which took place in September.

Hair Direct's "Team Up to Strike Out Alopecia Areata" campaign (inspired by NAAF's national, baseball-themed effort) included two local bake sales, a raffle for 2012 Philadelphia Phillies baseball tickets and a HairDirect.com donation page. All the money raised during these events was matched by Hair Direct, bringing the total effort to just over $2,400. Hair Direct has also covered all administrative costs associated with the drive, ensuring that 100% of contributions go to NAAF.
Another Propecia Lawsuit Claims Baldness Drug Caused Sexual Problems

An unidentified man in Colorado has filed suit against the maker of Propecia, claiming the male baldness drug caused him to suffer erectile dysfunction and other sexual problems. The claim, brought in U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado, is just the latest Propecia lawsuit filed against Merck & Co. by men who say that the drug caused sexual issues.

Propecia (known generically as finasteride 1 mg) is part of a class of drugs called 5-alpha reductase inhibitors, or 5-ARIs. Other drugs in this class including Merck’s Proscar (finasteride 5 mg), and GlaxoSmithKline’s Avodart (dutasteride) and Jalyn (dutasteride and tamsulosin) are manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline. While Propecia is used to treat male pattern baldness, other 5 ARIs are used to treat enlarged prostate. According to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), almost 5 million men were prescribed one of these medications between 2002 and 2009.
New FDA Clearance for the HairMax LaserComb

Hereditary hair loss is a devastating condition affecting over 30 million women in the United States. Until recently, when the HairMax Lux 9 was initially FDA Cleared for marketing for treatment of females, there had been only one FDA approved drug for treating this condition in women. This latest FDA Clearance now expands the HairMax treatment options for the three of the HairMax LaserComb models, as an effective first-line treatment of hereditary hair loss in both men and women. This is the fourth FDA 510(k) Clearance for marketing granted to Lexington Int’l this year.

The HairMax LaserComb cordless models that are now available are the HairMax Advanced 7, the HairMax Lux 9, and the HairMax Professional 12. These devices are offered at varying price points which fit the needs of all people wishing to treat their hair loss condition.

The HairMax is easy and convenient to use with treatments at home of just 9-15 minutes per day, three times per week to achieve results, which can be seen in as little as 12 weeks. Also, the HairMax is safe to use, as no serious side effects have ever been reported from use of the HairMax.

This FDA marketing Clearance for females combined with prior FDA marketing Clearance for males, provides the following official indication for the HairMax LaserComb.

Robot assisted hair restoration?

Hair-transplant surgery could become cheaper and more accessible with a new robot that plucks hair follicles from the back and sides of the head so they can be moved to the top and front of a balding pate.

It normally takes eight to nine hours to individually harvest, by hand, the 1,000 follicle clusters needed to build a full mane of hair, according to Dr. James Harris, director of the Hair Sciences Center of Colorado in Denver. Since the surgery is tricky and time-consuming, fewer than 10% of hair-restoration surgeons do it. Most simply remove a whole strip of scalp and separate out the follicles under a microscope. Strip surgery is painful and takes weeks or months to heal versus just a couple of days' healing time and less scarring with individual follicular-unit extraction, Harris says.

The new ARTAS robot decides which follicles to collect and plucks them out as the doctor stands by to check its work. The surgeon can watch from the same room or via a remote monitor.

Florida Doctor Provides Free Hair Restoration

Florida Physician Dr. Marco Barusco has launched a pro-bono hair restoration program. His program is designed to help the victims of traumatic injury, radiotherapy, or skin diseases who have suffered patches of hair loss or experienced scarring that can be hidden by hair but who are unable to afford the cost of hair transplantation surgery.

Board-certified hair restoration surgeon Dr. Marco Barusco, founder of Tempus Hair Restoration, P.A, was recently featured on the segment Making a Difference in Orlando, Florida TV station WKMG Local 6. The segment revealed that Dr. Barusco does more than solve genetic hair loss: He aims to help patients whose lives would be most dramatically changed by the hair transplantation procedure they can’t afford.
Pop Idol Winner Admits to Taking Hair Loss Treatment Propecia

As reported by the Guardian, the first winner of Pop Idol contest Will Young candidly admits to taking prescription-based hair loss medication Propecia finasteride after he started balding.

Known for his outspoken nature yet pleasant demeanor, Young said to the Leading British daily that male pattern baldness was slowly but surely affecting his confidence. It’s such an awful thing for men, the Guardian quoted him as saying.

Saying that hair loss made him conscious about his appearance, the pop star said he detested the idea of living with it and chose the clinical route to reverse the situation. It may be noted that Propecia can not only prevent hair loss, but can in fact initiate hair regrowth when used consistently over a period of time under medical supervision.
An East Yorkshire hospital has received a donation of equipment designed to reduce hair loss in patients undergoing cancer treatment.

The technique involves fitting the patient with a rubber cap that is pumped with a cooling fluid.

The cold temperature restricts the amount of blood reaching the hair follicles, protecting them from the effects of chemotherapy drugs.

A breast cancer charity has donated six of the units to Castle Hill Hospital.

Scalp cooling has been used for some years, and traditionally involves using frozen gel packs.

The machine was developed by family firm Paxman Coolers Ltd, based in Huddersfield. The first unit was produced in 1997.

Dr Robert Leonard Questions New Study Linking Stress to Hair Loss

Dr. Robert Leonard, chief surgeon and founder of Leonard Hair Transplant Associates, is questioning the results of a new study which found stress can cause hair loss in women. Leonard says the study, which is of only about 200 people, is better described as an observational study rather than a true medical, double-blinded study, and while it is interesting, it is not at all conclusive.

According to the study, extreme stress created by divorce or death of a spouse increased the likelihood that a woman will suffer from hair loss. The study also states that excessive sleeping patterns, having multiple children, smoking and the stresses of getting married also contribute to hair loss. The study goes on to say it found women who protected their head from excessive sunlight by wearing a hat faced a lower overall risk of hair loss.

Before you start worrying that you're going bald, consider the effect the time of year has on your barnet.

In a study published in the journal Dermatology, the scientists followed more than 800 healthy women over six years and found that they lost the most hair in the autumn months.

They tracked 800 women over six months and found autumn was the prime time for hair loss.

Alopecia doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your looks

Tracy Potter stared in the mirror and Dolly Parton stared back. I was 13 and had gone to Lewis’s with my mum to try on wigs to cover my bald patches. The choice was very different back then and I remember I had a big curly affair plonked on my head.

It looked awful.

Of course wigs and hair-pieces have improved no end since that day more than 30 years ago – as 47-year-old Tracy knows all too well.

She has just opened the Hair Fairy Wigs shop in Gateacre, using her own experience of hair loss over the past 30-plus years to offer an individual service for other women in her situation.

Stocking wigs priced from £60 up to £6,000 as well as hair pieces and scarves, there are also specialists on hand to advise women who have experienced hair loss through alopecia, chemotherapy or illness on make-up techniques.

Tracy herself has just undergone a course in cutting techniques so she can style a wig to suit the individual.

                Background:

Androgens are thought to have an adverse effect on female scalp hair growth. However, our clinical experience of androgen replacement therapy in women with androgen deficiency, in which hair loss was seldom reported, led us to question this concept.

Objectives:

This study was designed to evaluate the effect of subcutaneous testosterone therapy on scalp hair growth in female patients.

Baldness is a hairy situation

A lot of UW-Green Bay professors are bright above the shoulders. That is mostly because their bald shiny heads reflect the light into students' eyes.

There are a lot of different theories about why so many professors are bald. Professors believe it is from students being lazy. Students believe it is from the stress of professors thinking up ridiculously hard exam questions.

Whatever it is, it's hard to overlook the fact that a lot of professors who are bald also have some sort of facial hair.

There is a direct correlation between bald professors and the likelihood they have a beard.

The Harvard of cosmetology, Hairvard University, released a study that shows a link between baldness and the chances of having facial hair.

Hairvard professor Dr. Harry Rogaine's research shows there is a 78 percent chance of bald men having facial hair.

"When men lose their hair, they tend to over compensate by growing it somewhere else on their body," Rogaine said. "It will most likely be on their face."

For bald men, growing facial hair is the way they calm their unsteadiness of losing their hair.
In a post on Twitter.com, he writes, "The way my hair has receded in the last two years was best defined as dorky. I started balding at age 17 and after first being sad, I really embraced it. I was always cast older than my actual age which generally meant better roles...

UCSF Dermatologists Pen Book to Promote Education of Rare Disorders That Cause Hair Loss

Cicatricial alopecia, a group of rare disorders that cause permanent hair loss, destroys follicles and replaces them with scar tissue. It is exceedingly difficult to diagnosis, which means that anguished patients can spend years trying to figure out what’s wrong.

UCSF dermatologist Vera Price, MD, decided to change all that. Knowing that the subject is not covered in most training programs, she and her former fellow, Paradi Mirmirani, MD, decided to write a book that they hoped could be used by residents in their field. The result is the first text ever produced on the topic: Cicatricial Alopecia: An Approach to Diagnosis and Management.

We realized that education was needed, and we decided to do it, Price said.

The problem is that the book costs $139, a daunting sum given that Price and Mirmirani, a Kaiser Permanente doctor, wanted to donate it to the dermatology residents in the United States and Canada. Consequently, Springer, the book’s publisher, agreed to make DVDs available for $12 apiece. Then the families of six UCSF patients involved with cicatricial alopecia donated more than $13,000, enough to buy and distribute 800 copies.

Hair Restoration Pioneer Brings ACell and New Hydr ACell Solution to Norway Study

Gary Hitzig, M.D., a leading U.S. hair restoration specialist and pioneer of the ACell / platelet rich plasma (PRP) injections, was invited by the Poseidon Hair Clinic (sanctioned by the Norwegian government) in Oslo, Norway to participate in an international study on ACell Matristem and its ability to regenerate hair and improve wound healing. Dr. Hitzig, who practices at Prasad Cosmetic Surgery in New York City and Long Island, has been sought after by many researchers to expand on his groundbreaking ACell research.

In late August, Dr. Hitzig began an ACell study with the Poseidon Hair Clinic, an international hair restoration group with offices throughout Europe. The purpose of the study is to determine the effectiveness of ACell/PRP injections for hair loss compared to the traditional follicular unit extraction (FUE) hair transplant. Patients who received the ACell/PRP injections and patients who had an FUE hair transplant will be evaluated every three months for a year to determine differences in donor area hair re-growth, healing and hair duplication in the recipient areas.
Bay Area Hair Restoration Surgeon Participates as a Presenter at the 19th Annual Scientific Meeting of the ISHRS

Bay Area hair restoration surgeon, Sara Wasserbauer, M.D., recently presented research on the effectiveness of using an image-guided robotic system to remove and implant hair grafts on the scalp at the 19th Annual Scientific Meeting of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery in Anchorage, Alaska.

Dr. Wasserbauer recently completed a two-year study on the Restoration Robotics ARTAS System, an interactive, computer assisted technique utilizing image-guided robotics to enhance the quality of hair follicle harvesting. Operated under the direction of a physician, ARTAS has the potential to solve most of the technical challenges inherent in the manual follicular unit extraction (FUE) techniques.

During the two-year study, Dr. Wasserbauer collected data on the effectiveness of the ARTAS technology by itself and compared to manual hair transplantation techniques. .
FUE Hair Transplants Demand On the Rise

In spite of the sluggish global economy, demand for hair restoration surgery is on the rise increasing 15 percent in the US and 66 percent worldwide between 2004 and 2010, according to the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery’s 2011 Practice Census. The key reason for this spike in procedures, according to ISHRS member Alan J. Bauman, M.D., is the demand for a less-invasive hair transplant procedure known as Follicular-Unit Extraction, or FUE.

I remember vividly back in 2003 at the ISHRS Orlando Live Surgery Workshop where I demonstrated the first live FUE procedure performed at that conference, that many doctors were reluctant to adopt the challenging technique, preferring instead to persist with the traditional strip-harvest method, said Dr. Bauman, a board-certified hair restoration surgeon and member of the ISHRS Media Relations Committee. Only recently have more doctors rushed to offer FUE, and it’s plain to see how well patients are responding to it.
The hair pins used to secure extravagant Irish dancing wigs may have led to a teenager's hair loss, two Irish doctors have warned.

In the Irish medical magazine, Hospital Doctor, they asked young Irish dancers to beware of pinning on heavy ringleted wigs.

Dr Sally Jane O'Shea and Dr Aoife Lally of St Vincent's University Hospital, Dublin, pointed to the case of a 16-year-old girl, who had a history of hair loss over three years.

However, Irish dancing teacher Linda Doherty from LegenDerry dancing school said she had never heard of the problem before.

"There is a risk with hair extensions and wigs and my heart goes out to this girl. But it's the first time I have heard of something like this," she added.

The teenager involved said she had found two distinct patches of hair loss on her head, but the hair grew back within two months.

Enhanced Effect of Platelet-Rich Plasma Containing a New Carrier on Hair Growth

                BACKGROUND

Treatments for alopecia are in high demand, but not all are safe and reliable. Dalteparin and protamine microparticles (D/P MPs) can effectively carry growth factors (GFs) in platelet-rich plasma (PRP).

OBJECTIVE

To identify the effects of PRP-containing D/P MPs (PRP&D/P MPs) on hair growth.

METHODS&MATERIALS

Participants were 26 volunteers with thin hair who received five local treatments of 3 mL of PRP&D/P MPs (13 participants) or PRP and saline (control, 13 participants) at 2- to 3-week intervals and were evaluated for 12 weeks. Injected areas comprised frontal or parietal sites with lanugo-like hair. Experimental and control areas were photographed. Consenting participants underwent biopsies for histologic examination.
Irwig and published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, reveals that finasteride an antiandrogen that treats hair loss and is found in popular male pattern baldness drug Propecia can cause persistent sexual dysfunction, including low sexual desire, erectile dysfunction and problems with orgasms.
Hair loss triggered by controllable factors like smoking, divorce

There are many factors that doctors say determine hair loss, including age, genetics and bad nutrition. But new research shows there's more controllable factors, like smoking, sun exposure and even divorce.

How much hair loss people experience is usually determined by our genes.

For instance, if your grandpa lost all of his hair at midlife, you could face a similar story.

But now, doctors say we might have some control over hair loss.

Researchers at University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio studied 150 sets of twins at a twin festival in Twinsburg, Ohio.

Dr. Bahman Guyuron took photos of the identical twins and asked them a long list of questions: did they smoke, have children, etc.

"Twins are destined to have similar faces, similar amount of hair," says Dr. Guyuron.

Tabatha Coffey and Viviscal Makeover American Attitudes About Hair

In America, talking about hair thinning and hair loss is taboo, only discussed with embarrassment and great uneasiness. Although hair thinning and hair loss is very common, more than 60 million American women and men suffer from the condition; the topic is mostly shared with physicians, dermatologists and stylists. To help lift the veil of secrecy and shame,

Tabatha Coffey, celebrity stylist and star of Tabatha's Salon Takeover, has partnered with Viviscal natural hair supplements. Coffey and Viviscal aim to educate about hair loss and thinning, making the topic mainstream and helping to ease Americans' concern, restoring confidence and triumph.

"Besides heredity, there are many reasons for hair loss and thinning," says Tabatha Coffey. "I see signs of the problem in my clients and speak candidly with fellow stylists about the issue and its growing incidence in young women. In fact, I've always had thin hair and experienced severe hair loss during the loss of my mother."

Divorce And Women's Hair Loss Linked In New Study

Divorce and women's hair loss may be linked, a new study shows, and stress is the most likely reason.

"Most likely, stress is the aspect of a troubling divorce that appears to lead to hair loss among women," lead researcher Dr. Bahman Guyuron, chairman of the department of plastic surgery at Case Western Reserve School of Medicine, told HealthDay.

After genetics, marital status is the single highest predictor of hair loss among women, and the most hair loss occurs in women who have lost a spouse either through death or divorce, HealthDay reported.

Researchers conducted two studies on female identical twins who completed lifestyle surveys, blood tests and photo analysis of hair. Using twins in studies rules out the factor of genetic differences, since each twin has the same genes as the other.

Research Suggests Genetics Not to Blame for Hair Loss

Hair loss may be more due to diet and stress than genetics, especially for women, a new study by the Korean Hair Research Society has found.

Both men and women run a high risk of losing their hair early even if there is no history of this in their family, the society said. It based its findings on a survey of 1,220 patients at 13 university hospitals in Korea.

Although a contentious issue, the general consensus among scientists today is that 90 percent of hair loss has its roots in genetic causes.

But the KHRS study on the association between hair loss and genetics found that some 41.8 percent of men, and 47.9 percent of women, said they are the only member of their families who suffer from hair loss. Family here means parents, grandparents, siblings and older relatives.

Static hair The science behind the frizz

Static electricity is a real cosmetic problem for many people causing bad hair mornings and annoying frizz during the day.

This problem is the same thing that causes you to get a shock when you touch a metal doorknob after walking across a polyester carpet. We all know the phrase ‘static hair’ but do you really know why your hair acts like it does because of it?

The science bit

Your hair is made up of atoms, which in turn are made up of electrons, protons and neutrons. If the atom has the same amount of protons and electrons, it is neutral. When electrons move from one atom to another, though, the atom becomes an ‘ion’ which means it’s either positive or negatively charged.

If you remember your physics what happens when two of the same charges come together they repel!!

Hair loss from chemotherapy can be difficult for a young child or their classmates to comprehend, so in a new book from the American Cancer Society, a young girl talks about hair loss, hair donations, and the importance of giving to others.

Emma Wheeler loves to spend time with her friends and classmates, but there was a time in her life when she didn't like going to school.

"It was just really embarrassing because people weren't able to differentiate me from being a boy or a girl," Emma said.

She was only 5 when she was diagnosed with leukemia. She required chemotherapy, and her hair fell out as a side effect.

According to the American Cancer Society, more than 11,000 children will be diagnosed with cancer this year.

With the market for women's shampoo in Japan saturated, cosmetics makers are competing to grab the middle-aged male market with shampoos that strengthen hair and protect against hair loss.

Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co. began selling a scalp shampoo for men under its UL OS brand on Sept. 13. Combining ingredients that remove skin oils and foreign matter from the scalp without damaging the skin, the company is targeting men in their latter 30s to 40s. Executive official Chiaki Sakurai says the shampoo "leads to a healthy scalp."

Although at 1,575 yen for a 300 milliliter bottle the shampoo is more expensive than many regular shampoos, Sakurai was confident, saying, "This generation will spend money for quality products."

Embracing Baldness Is Key To Inner Calm For Men

Going bald can be difficult for a man especially if he is in his 20s or 30s.

However, a study finds that men who embrace their receding hairline tend to do better than men who try compensation techniques, such as surgery or medicine, the Cleveland Clinic reported.

Just feeling awful about the way you look is a horrible way to feel, said Michael McKee, Ph. D., a psychologist who did not take part in the study. And then if you feel the way you think that all the women you want to go out with are going to feel that way too. And then you lose further confidence, and then you stumble around and they probably are disinterested in you or if you are combing it over, the way I was trying. Just go the way it is.
California Surgeon Leads Robotic Hair Restoration FDA Trial

Bay Area hair restoration surgeon, Sara Wasserbauer, M.D., is leading a research study involving the recently FDA approved robotic hair transplant technology. One of only two sites, Dr. Wasserbauer is studying how effective the interactive image-guided robotic system is at removing and implanting hair grafts on a scalp.

The Restoration Robotics ARTAS System is an interactive, computer assisted technique utilizing image-guided robotics to enhance the quality of hair follicle harvesting. Operated under the direction of a physician, ARTAS has the potential to solve most of the technical challenges inherent in the manual follicular unit extraction (FUE) techniques.

During the two-year study, Dr. Wasserbauer has been collecting data on the effectiveness of the ARTAS technology by itself and compared to manual hair transplantation techniques. Entering the final stage of the research, Dr. Wasserbauer will be examining the rate of hair growth in patients nine months after having their ARTAS System hair transplant.

So far, Wasserbauer has found several benefits of using the robotics technology for follicular unit extraction, including:

Iain Sallis, East Yorkshire’s only trichologist, is setting the ball in motion to unite hair salons and clinics across the country for the first time as he looks to provide free training for hairdressers and their employees on how to spot hair and scalp problems in clients.

Iain’s first free ‘Trichology Training Evening’ will be held at the Andrew Barton salon in Leeds on the 29th September lasting approximately 3 hours. Although literature and invites will be sent out to salons in the surrounding areas, any interested parties are welcome contact Iain directly to book in.

Trichology is the branch of medicine that deals with the scientific study of the health of hair and scalp and Iain, who owns his own hair salons and heads up his ‘Iain Sallis Trichology clinics’ in London, Leeds, Hull, York, Sheffield, Lincoln and Nottingham is one of only a handful of qualified trichologists, or ‘hair doctors’ in the UK. Through this ‘first of its kind’ training exercise, Iain is looking to make a shift in the attitudes of hairdressers, highlighting everything from what a trichologist is, and how they can help their particular salon as well as explaining hair myths and common hair problems - identifying scalp disorders and what to do with a client with a potentially medical problem.

First Painless Hair Transplant Performed

A recently FDA-approved device originally created to eliminate pain associated with the use of needles and syringes for common dermal fillers and neurotoxin injections such as Botox®, Dysport®, Juvederm,® and Restylane® has now been adopted for first-time use by Dr. Alan J. Bauman, the nation’s leading hair transplant surgeon, for use in his hair transplant procedures.

The Ouchless Needle, made by BellaNovus, is the final ingredient in modern hair transplantation surgery that will serve to completely eliminate patient concerns about the issue of pain associated with the hair transplantation process, says Dr. Alan J. Bauman.

The Ouchless Needle, made by BellaNovus Development Company LLC, is a disposable syringe-attachable dispenser that delivers a precise stream of a numbing vapocoolant spray to the skin just ahead of the tip of the needle before the skin is pierced. With its innovative delivery system, this new medical technological device works to instantly reduce the pain associated with having injections without the burden of freezing ice or time-consuming messy creams and, according to clinical trials, minimizes post-injection numbness, swelling and bruising thereby providing patients a far superior treatment experience. It also speeds up the treatment process both for doctors, and patients on a busy schedule. Watch Dr. Bauman discuss the benefits of The Ouchless Needle.
The 60-Second Baldness Test: Normal Hair Loss or Adrogenetic Alopecia?

Researchers from Yale University announced last week in the journal Cell their discovery that stem cells from adipose (fat) tissue may be used to stimulate hair follicles as a way to cure adrogenetic alopecia (baldness) in men. While the scientists are searching for cellular signals that are awakening dormant hair follicles, what are the signals that the average Joe can look for to tell him if he may be going bald before there is significant hair loss? According to dermatological research, there is a simple 60-second test men can do on a monthly basis to keep tabs on their hair’s health.

Hair Follicle Life Cycle
At any point in time, approximately 90% of the hair on your head is in its growth phase. The life cycle of a hair follicle consists of three phases. The first phase called Anagen is the time of active hair growth, which lasts between 2-6 years. The second phase called Catragen is a transitional phase and lasts 2-3 weeks. The third and final phase called Telogen is a resting phase that lasts about 2-3 months and is when the hair follicle is shed and replaced by a new growing hair follicle, starting a new cycle of hair growth.

Old Hair Loss Standard
The old standard for monitoring hair loss was that normal hair loss amounted to approximately 100 hairs per day. This was based on a theoretical assumption that the average scalp contains 100,000 hairs, of which 10% are in the telogen phase. That puts 10,000 telogen phase hairs on your head, of which another 10% have reached their roughly 100-day life span and are ready to be shed. This then translates to approximately 100 hairs being shed per day.

Researchers Discover Source of Hair Regeneration

A type of stem cell associated with the development of new fat cells, called adipose precursor cells, was necessary to regenerate hair in mouse models

Earlier this year, researchers from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine found that the depletion of a certain stem cell (thought to be a progenitor cell) may determine male pattern baldness. Now, Yale scientists have made a new discovery that could yield new treatments for baldness.

Valerie Horsley, study leader and assistant professor of molecular, cellular and developmental biology at Yale, and a team of Yale researchers, have identified the source of signals that prompt hair growth.

Those with male pattern baldness still have stem cells in follicle roots, but these cells are unable to spur hair regeneration. The stem cells require signals from inside the skin in order to grow hair, but the source of these signals has been unknown to scientists until now.

Wayne Rooney is back in explosive form after trying to resolve the stresses in his life.

For one, the Manchester United and England striker concluded his head was just not right. Alarmed by his thinning thatch, Rooney risked ridicule in the off-season by undergoing a $50,000 hair transplant.

And the results like United's this season are unequivocal, with those new follicles now covering his scalp.

I've spent more time in the mirror, Rooney quipped Tuesday at the England team hotel. I'm sure some of you who are going bald, it's a bit stressful. So I made a decision to get it done. I thought, why not?

Leading hair transplant surgeon warns against media inaccuracies

One of the UK's leading hair transplant surgeons - Dr Bessam Farjo - has conveyed his concerns surrounding the recent criticism of celebrity hair transplant surgery.

A number of tabloid publications have deemed Wayne's surgery a 'failure' and pictures have been released showing the area where the surgery was performed.

Dr Farjo comments: "What the press are showing is images of the period of rest for the transplanted follicles, which may have broken off or fallen out. What's important is that the roots stay inside the skin and will be working on brand new hairs that will start to sprout around four months after his surgery. A proper result can take as long as 10-14 months to fully mature."

It is possible that Wayne may elect to have more surgery in the future because he may desire even more density to the same area. However, the more likely reason that he would have more surgery is that he loses more of his original hair resulting in new areas of loss.

Dr Farjo continues: "There will be a limit to how far he can chase the loss depending on the severity his baldness gets to. This is the primary reason why caution needs to be exercised in younger men and, if possible, managed with medications first to control the loss before contemplating surgery.

Going Bald? The Fault May Lie in Your Cells

Researchers at Yale University have found new clues to the causes of hair loss in the fatty skin cells of mice.

Studying cells from the fatty layer, the researchers found that signals from these fat cells were needed to stimulate the stem cells at the base of hair follicles, which are dormant in baldness. These cells could help scientists identify how to treat hair loss in humans.

The fat cells are important for hair growth. If they’re not there, the hair won’t grow, said Valerie Horsley, the lead author of the study.

Horsley said her team will now work on identifying the cells in humans that do the same thing.

Hair Transplant Physician Unveils Link Between Nutritional Workout Supplements and Hair Loss at Conference

Hair transplant physician Dr. Larry Shapiro will exhibit his line of nutritional supplements at the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) Annual Scientific Meeting September 14-18 in Anchorage, Alaska. His line of hair restoration products titled Help Hair Shake, also available in shampoo and conditioner varieties, as well as his Help Hair Vitamins are designed to make transplanted hair regrow at a faster rate.

At the ISHRS meeting, hundreds of hair restoration surgeons, surgical assistants and hair transplant staff will convene for workshops, lectures, booths and meetings on "New Vistas & Trusted Techniques in Hair Transplantation."

During Dr. Larry Shapiro's 22 years of experience as a hair transplant surgeon, he began to question the link between nutritional supplements and hair loss. His research led him to develop a line of Help Hair(R) products containing nutrients specifically designed to improve the quality of the hair. He studied the effect of one of his products, Help Hair(R) Shake, after hair transplants and discovered that the transplanted hair grew in much more quickly than usual.

Surprising reasons for hair loss

According to a recent report by the organization, almost 80 million people across America alone, suffer from some form of hereditary hair loss. However, apart from this, there are many other reasons that might contribute to hair loss. For instance, losing 20-50 strands per day while combing or washing is quite normal, but more than 100 strands per day is a sign of early balding.

Excessive usage of low quality and chemical heavy hair dyes and styling equipments: While hair styling in terms of blow drying and moderate hair product use is okay, excessive use will make your hair brittle and damage it for the long run. This leads to greater hair fall. However, luckily, the damage caused by them can be reversed by taking proper care. Be wise about choosing hair products and treatments.

Tight hairstyle: We agree that tight hairstyles like braids and weaves are in vogue currently. But remember that these hairstyles may damage your hair due to a condition called traction alopecia. The prime areas of hair loss in this condition are around the temples and at the sides of the head.

Women, teenagers are also prone to baldness

Contrary to perception that baldness is exclusive to men, a doctor at the Eden Family hospital in Accra says women and teenagers are also vulnerable.

Dr. Andre Kwasi Kumah says hair loss or baldness, be it in men, women or teenagers can be attributed to genetics.

He said, the higher the testosterone [male hormone] the faster a man can lose his hair. This, he noted, could lead to increase sexual urge or libido.

"There has been a myth for several years that bald headed men have high libido, and i think that is the reason behind this myth," Dr Andre said.

The hair, basically, contain a material called Ceratin. It is produced from under the skin and later appears on the scalp as hair. The hair seen on the scalp of every individual is a dead caratin extracts from the skin, Doctor Andre explained.

He said hair losers can consult their doctor for the cause of their loss hair.
A Washington man has filed a product liability lawsuit against Merck & Co. over sexual dysfunction side effects of Propecia, the popular male pattern baldness drug.

Paul Dawson, 26, filed a Propecia impotence lawsuit on August 18 in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington, indicating that he has experienced a number of sexual problems after taking the hair-loss drug.

Merck faces a growing number of similar Propecia lawsuits filed by men who allege that the drug maker failed to adequately warn about the risk that the medication may lead to permanent and irreversible problems, such as impotence, erectile dysfunction, infertility and other sexual dysfunction.

According to Dawson’s Propecia suit, he began using the medication in February 2008 to reverse the effects of male pattern hair loss. In August 2008, the 26 year-old reported to his doctor that he was suffering from sexual dysfunction, inculding decreased libido, impotence, anxiety and depression.

Dawson alleges that he continues to suffer injuries from Propecia, such as erectile dysfunction, loss of sexual sensation, decreased semen output, testicular pain and emotional issues. He also alleges that he would not have used Propecia if he or his physician had been warned about the risk of these permanent problems.

German brand Alpecin, a shampoo that is said to reduce hereditary hair loss through its key ingredient caffeine, is far from glamorous. Nonetheless, threatened by the prospect of baldness, German men have been buying the product for decades, with 2m bottles sold nationally in 2010.

But how to expand beyond Germany? Having launched in the UK and South Africa 18 months ago, Alpecin sales got off to a slow start. As a result, brand owner Dr Kurt Wolff, a family business founded in?post-war?Germany, decided to bolster the launch with a new campaign.
Hair Care Tips After Child Delivery

Hair loss after pregnancy is extremely common because of hormonal changes in the woman's body.

According to Consultant Gynaecologict Dr Erum Bashir, there are very low levels of estrogen in a woman's body after childbirth, and a decreased level of estrogen is one major cause of hair loss.

"During pregnancy, the chemistry and hormones of a woman's body changes.

Pregnant women have a heightened level of progesterone and estrogen.

When these levels drop suddenly after delivery, this causes their hair to slip into the resting," she said.

"Once the child has been born, the "resting" hair follicles begin to fall out.

Most commonly, hair loss after pregnancy occurs between three and six months after pregnancy."

Rooney’s grey hair ‘perfectly normal and temporary’, says transplant clinic

Wayne Rooney’s greying hair is perfectly normal and temporary and is part of the post hair transplant treatment, the director of the Harley Street clinic, where the football ace got his transplant, has said.

The clinic who treated Wayne Rooney when he had his hair transplant have admitted that developing grey hair can be a common short-term side-effect of the procedure.

The Manchester United and England star reportedly spent £30,000 to get a full head of hair earlier this year in a bid to cure his baldness.
New baldness remedy in clinical trials

Botox maker Allergan has begun Phase 2 clinical trials of a possible hair-growth treatment for men and women based on the active ingredient in its drug Latisse, which stimulates the growth of eyelashes.

The company has already conducted Phase 1 clinical trials, which tested the safety and stability of the medication, said Scott Whitcup, Allergan’s chief scientific officer and executive vice president of research and development.

Two separate sets of Phase 2 clinical trials are under way to measure how well the drug, bimatoprost, works to fight male-pattern baldness in men and hair-thinning in women, he said. Results could be available by late 2012.
Restoration Robotics Launches Its Revolutionary ARTAS System to Treat Hair Loss

Restoration Robotics, Inc. a privately-held medical device company, today announced the treatment of the first commercial patient using the ground-breaking ARTAS System, the first and only FDA cleared, physician controlled, interactive, computer assisted technology that allows safe and effective follicular unit extraction (FUE). The ARTAS System was developed in close collaboration with several leading hair restoration physicians to enable minimally invasive harvesting of hair follicles. The patient Vincent DeLany, was treated by James Harris, MD, of the Hair Sciences Center of Colorado (Denver, CO). Dr. Harris, a world-renowned hair surgeon, was a key principal investigator in the clinical studies.

We couldn’t be more pleased with the results which were consistent to what we saw during the clinical trial across a broad group of patients, commented James Harris, MD, of the Hair Sciences Center in Denver, CO. This technology allows patients to permanently regain the vitality of their appearance affected by hair loss. Surgeons will now be able to shorten the learning curve required to master FUE technique, deliver consistent and quality results, and meet the growing demand by patients seeking less invasive hair restoration options.
Oral finasteride improved the quality of life of androgenetic alopecia patients

Although androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is not a systemic disease, some patients suffer from anxiety about the progression of their condition.
This study was conducted in order to ascertain whether treatment by oral finasteride can improve the quality of life (QOL) of these patients.

Twenty-seven male AGA patients aged 19-76 years (average, 33.8) answered the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI), WHO/QOL-26 and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) questionnaires before and after the administration of finasteride (1 mg/day) for 6 months.

Patients assessed by physicians as "excellent" or "good" were defined as "high responders"; those assessed as "moderate" or "no change" were "low responders".

Simmons Firm Investigates Popular Hair Loss Drug Linked to Serious Sexual Side Effects

Simmons Browder Gianaris Angelides & Barnerd LLC is currently investigating claims that Propecia, a drug manufactured by Merck to treat baldness in men, can have debilitating sexual side effects.

Propecia, and its parent drug Proscar, are the trademark versions of finasteride, a synthetic antiandrogen that limits the production of enzymes believed to contribute to the cause of male pattern baldness and an enlarged prostate. Propecia treats baldness in men, while Proscar treats benign prostatic hyperplasia.

A new study conducted by George Washington University and published in the March issue of the Journal of Sexual Medicine found that taking finasteride can cause decreased arousal, erectile dysfunction, severe depression and other serious sexual side effects.

Hair Restoration Goes Mainstream

For many people, cosmetic surgery is no longer taboo to discuss and, in fact, procedures often are shared openly in social circles and in the workplace. The reason? More options than ever before to nip, tuck, restore, enhance and rejuvenate nearly every aspect of one's appearance.

Now, new findings released today from a recent member survey conducted by the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) -- the world's leading medical authority on hair loss and hair restoration -- finds that people undergoing hair restoration surgery also are more willing to own up to having a little work done on their locks.

Specifically, when ISHRS members were asked if their patients were more likely, just as likely or less likely to discuss their hair restoration procedures with their family and friends in 2010 compared to 2008, just over half (56.4 percent) of members said their patients would be 'more likely' to discuss their hair restoration as they were in 2008. In addition, more than one-third (36.2 percent) of members said their patients would be 'just as likely' to discuss and only 7.4 percent responded that they would be 'less likely' to discuss their hair restoration procedures as they were in 2008.

Lady Gaga is going bald due to all the chemical dyes she has used on her hair, which is all part of her flamboyant and creative package. She is turning to the product Rogaine, which is often promoted in TV commercials for arresting the baldness and promoting new hair growth. just the mention that the world’s most recognized pop diva is using this product, should be worth millions of advertising for the Rogaine company.

If Lady Gaga uses it, you can bet that her millions of followers will keep Rogaine in mind if ever they feel their hair is thinning. Lady Gaga just made Rogaine cool and it is no longer for the middle-aged balding man with the pot belly that is a stereotype for baldness.
Popular baldness drug linked to male breast cancer

A popular drug used by men across the country to treat pattern baldness could come with an unwanted side effect: an increased risk of breast cancer.

Although the apparent risks are low, Health Canada issued a warning Thursday telling consumers the drug, finasteride, could be potentially dangerous. The drug, which comes in one-milligram and five-milligram formats, is used in the lower dose to treat baldness and the higher dose to treat non-cancerous enlarged prostate. Previous studies have raised flags about the five-milligram format, sold in Canada under the brand name Proscar, including an increased risk of prostate cancer.

Health Canada says a small number of breast-cancer cases have been reported worldwide among patients who took the drug in either dose. Previous research has found the drug can lead to prolonged sexual dysfunction, prompting men in Canada and the United States to sue drug maker Merck & Co. Inc.
Hair transplantation is, in a word, tedious. It’s a procedure that takes all day and involves the manual implantation of thousands of hair follicles.

But what if a robot could do it?

Restoration Robotics announced on Wednesday that it raised $41 million in Series C financing for its Artas system, a computer-assisted medical device that uses an image-guided robotic arm to identify and harvest individual follicles.

Clarus Ventures, Sutter Hill Ventures, Alloy Ventures and Interwest Partners were all a part of the round.

The funds will be used to commercialize and market the U.S. launch of the technology, the company says — the logical next step after receiving clearance from the Food & Drug Administration in April.

Baldness Calculator Launched On Internet

A calculator has been launched on the internet aimed at giving men an idea of when, if ever, they will lose their hair.

The dating device comes courtesy of Dr Adolf Klenk, a hair loss specialist associated with the Alpecin research institute in Germany.

His calculator asks the reader a series of questions and then, based on the answers given, predicts the likelihood of possible balding and the approximate age at which it may happen.

If you are feeling brave, you can even upload a picture to see what you would look like with no hair.

Baldness affects men - and some women - of all ages and income brackets so being rich will not keep someone's hair on - although, as with Elton John and Wayne Rooney, it can help with the regrowth.

New ISHRS Survey Finds Hair Restoration Surgery Market Increased 47 Percent Worldwide in 2010

Despite slow economic growth worldwide, the demand for procedures to correct hair loss proved to be stronger than ever, according to statistics released today from a recent member survey conducted by the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) -- the world's leading medical authority on hair loss and hair restoration. From 2008 to 2010, the total extrapolated market size for hair restoration surgery increased 47.9 percent.

Specifically, the extrapolated worldwide number of surgical hair restoration procedures performed in 2010 was approximately 279,381, up 11 percent from 2008. Since the ISHRS starting compiling membership data in 2004, the number of procedures performed around the world jumped 66 percent -- with the Middle East (454 percent increase) and Asia (345 percent increase) experiencing the largest growth.

"People with hair loss often report that it puts them at a disadvantage in their personal and professional lives," said Jerry E. Cooley, MD, president of the ISHRS. "Patients appreciate the natural-looking, permanent results of hair restoration surgery, which is why we are seeing a growing trend of more men, and women, around the world turning to hair restoration surgery to look younger and feel more self-confident."

5% minoxidil foam once daily versus 2% minoxidil solution

A randomized, single-blind trial of 5% minoxidil foam once daily versus 2% minoxidil solution twice daily in the treatment of androgenetic alopecia in women.

BACKGROUND: Although twice-daily application of propylene glycol-containing 2% minoxidil topical solution (MTS) stimulates new hair growth, higher concentrations of minoxidil in a once-daily, propylene glycol-free formulation may improve efficacy and reduce unpleasant side effects.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to compare the efficacy, safety, and acceptability and to show noninferiority of once-daily 5% minoxidil topical foam (MTF) with twice-daily 2% MTS in women with androgenetic alopecia.
Tips to cure baldness, dandruff

Dandruff: Soak a few fenugreek (methi) seeds overnight in water and grind it to a fine paste in the morning. Apply the paste on the head for 30mins and wash off. This not just has cooling effect, but also keeps your hair dandruff-free.

Hair fall: Mix cocnut and gingelly (sesame) oil. Add an amla (gooseberry), a few leaves of white hibiscus and boil for 20mins. Let the mixture cool and apply this oil on your head and wash off after 20 mins. This will help prevent hair fall.
Celeb appeal sees hair transplants jump in UAE

Hair transplant clinics in Dubai say they have seen a surge in demand following admissions from celebrities that they have paid for surgery to cover their receding hairlines.

The city has seen increasing numbers of medical clinics and plastic surgeons offering hair transplant procedures, with specialists flying into Dubai to capitalise on demand.

Industry experts suggest much of this is on the back of celebrities such as footballer Wayne Rooney and British actor James Nesbit admitting to undergoing the procedure.

Anybody who has influence on the general public who comes up with a statement [saying they have had the surgery] does make a difference, said Dr Shehab Beg of the Dubai Hair Clinic, who performs 15-20 surgeries a month in Pakistan and Dubai.

Rooney in June confessed to his 768,869 Twitter fans that he had a hair transplant, telling followers: I was going bald at 25, why not?

Female Hair Loss Treatment Announces Money Back Guarantee

Sephren, has recently become the most popular NON-prescription (emphasis on the "non") hair loss treatment formulated specifically for female hair loss/alopecia. Having a perfect A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau, it is now backed by a 90 day money back guarantee.

The all-natural female hair loss treatment prevents hair from thinning while promoting hair regrowth. Sephren uses two all-natural formulas to counteract hair loss in women. The combination of a dietary supplement and topical serum attacks hair loss in two important ways.

"Losing hair for a woman can be disturbing and even devastating as I was finding out while going through menopause. I never had a lot of hair and it is fine so losing "more than normal" was an issue for me. I decided to try Sephren and after just a week or so, the hair loss diminished to almost no loss.

New Hair Loss Treatment Uses Your Own Blood

How far would you go for a full, thick head of hair? If you've tried the specialized shampoos and over the counter treatments without success, patients say they're seeing results from a new procedure.

With every stroke of her brush, Cheryl Sever makes creative designs come alive, but over the past 15 years, she's had to get creative with something else: her appearance.

Cheryl had needed wigs to cover her disappearing hair.

She suffers from an auto immune disease that causes inflammation and scarring called Discoid Lupus.

"The Discoid Lupus took all the hair on the top of my head and I really was a basket case," said Sever.

Because every time the Lupus returned, Cheryl's balding scalp got worse.

"It scarred, it was red, it was shiny..I was going to a dermatologist for about two years and every month I would get shots in my head," she adds.

Her dermatologist recommended she see hair restoration specialist Dr. Joseph Greco for an experimental home grown elixir made from a syringe of her very own blood.
The 25-year-old singer - who has experienced hair loss because of how often she has dyed her tresses - has started using Rogaine in order to reverse the years of damage she has subjected her locks to in the name of fashion.
A source is quoted by The Sun newspaper as saying: "Over the years Lady Gaga has put her locks under a lot of stress. She's poured so much chemicals over them that it's damaged her follicles.
"She's hoping by using Rogaine, she can repair some of the harm."

New Findings on Hair Loss at International Hair Research Conference in Jerusalem

The Western world's largest conference to date on hair research and hair loss met in Jerusalem recently, when over 400 dermatologists and scientists attended the four-day 15th Annual Meeting of the European Hair Research Society (EHRS).

The Jerusalem Post reports that the event attracted over 450 experts in the field from 30 countries, about half of them from Israel. It was led by senior dermatologist and professor Abraham Zlotogorski, director of the hair clinic at Hadassah University Medical Center in Jerusalem's Ein Kerem and director of the hospital's Center for Genetic Diseases of Skin and Hair.

Trichology (from the Greek word for hair) is the official name for the medical specialty that studies hair. "Trichology is a subspecialty of dermatology," explained Zlotogorski, "but there isn't even one country where it is officially recognized. At present, hair disorders are part of the work of dermatologists, who also treat venereal diseases."
Who Has the Worst Hair in Hollywood?

National Hair Loss Awareness Month falls during a timeframe when shedding hair is notable. According to Leonard, July and August are a common time of year for people to notice an increase in shedding hair. Every summer men and women see more and more of their hair shed between July 4th and Labor Day, said Dr. Leonard. This is a yearly phenomenon, and despite its normality, we do not have a good answer as to the cause.

In the 25 years that Dr. Leonard has been specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of hair loss, it is a regular occurrence that he addresses each summer. The good news is that the shedding is self-limiting and will stop in early September, added Dr. Leonard. Unfortunately, there is yet another, even more significant shedding season during the months of November and December.

Haircare Multi Laser Brush Sees Explosive Sales Growth

The Haircare Multi laser Hair Brush continues to see growing sales in both Australia and the United States. The technology has been scientifically proven to help reduce and reverse hair loss, the affordable solution is designed for both men and women.

Although there are myriad reasons for hair loss including stress, medications and chemical deficiencies among others, the primary cause is androgenetic alopecia. This condition is commonly known as male pattern baldness, but hormonal changes, the pill and pregnancy are more common reasons for hair loss in women.

Since the 1960’s ongoing and improving research has shown that scalp stimulation can have positive impact on hair loss. In the new millennium, scientific research has found that handheld laser combs can effectively enhance the results of hair loss therapy for millions suffering from this condition.
Introducing Nanogen Hair Loss Products at Fabove Canada

We're proud to announce a new brand in our hair loss product inventory - Nanogen.
Made in the United Kingdom, the Nanogen line targets hair loss issues using a simple, four-step protocol - cleanse, stabilize, stimulate and conceal.

The Nanogen Hair Prepare Shampoo cleanses the scalp, removing flakes and oil. It gently exfoliates, making it easier for any topical hair treatment to truly penetrate and improving the treatments' overall results. The Daily Volume Conditioner helps thicken the hair. Its moisturizing ingredients create long-lasting natural shine and volume. Unlike many other conditioners, Daily Volume is designed for everyday use and the conditioner's thickening ingredients will not build up on the outer layer of your hair causing breakage and dandruff.

The Follicule Defence Active Treatment Mask is also recommended to help stabilize and thicken the hair. An intense restorative treatment designed for weekly use, the mask's unique formula works to protect hair and scalp cells from damage and maintain healthy hair growth.

Diet influences female hair loss

"Cuckoo" diets are to blame for hair loss, according to Institute of Trichologists.

The Institute of Trichologists has said that diet plays a big role in female hair loss.

Chairman Marilyn Sherlock said that women most commonly experienced hair loss when they have an iron deficiency or are dieting.

"By dieting, I don't mean dieting sensibly, I mean crash dieting. And because of the hair growth cycle - if hair is suddenly damaged by lack of proper nutrients, it's three months before it falls out," he explained.

Wayne Rooneys new hair is not growing after transplant

The England footballer had a hair transplant at the beginning of June and proudly tweeted a photo of his new barnet soon afterwards.

Rooney had joked he hoped to eventually style his locks into a curly mop, but it seems he may have to put his dreams on hold for now.

The Manchester United striker is currently in the US for the club’s pre-season tour, but snaps of the star outside his hotel suggest his new hair transplant hasn’t done its job.

Far from modelling a luscious head of hair, Rooney seems to have actually lost hair since having the painful transplant operation last month.

So will Rooney just have to accept his rapidly receding hairline at the age of 25?

It would seem there is hope for the balding star, as losing hair is part of the initial transplant healing process.

Grey Hair Mens Most Feared Ageing Process

With the news that super star footballer Ryan Giggs is going grey, Iain Sallis explores the truth behind one of men’s most feared aging processes.

Grey hair: the facts

Melanocytes are the cells in a human body which gives us our colour (hair, eyes, and skin) and so; are arguably to blame for more wars and upset in human history than any other cell, it also gives the human body some of the most noted signs of where we come from and how old we are?

The ageing hair follicle:

Hair colour shows signs of age-related changes only one of which is the well known reduction of melanocytes in hair. There is a 10-20% reduction of pigment producing melanocytes for every decade after 30 years of age (in Caucasian). Though it’s gradual in the skin, it can be quite sudden in the hair follicle.

Hair Restoration Using Body Hair

As technology has advanced, dealing with hair loss has become much easier. Hair Restoration is no longer restricted to prescription medication, hair plugs or the traditional linear transplant. New options which are based off the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) technique promise a natural looking hair transplant with less visible scarring and now, donor hair may be successfully transplanted from other parts of the body, not just the head.

According to Los Angeles hair restoration provider Dr. Sanusi Umar, "Traditionally, hair transplants entail the transfer of hair from the back and the sides of the head, where patients typically don’t experience hair loss. Until recently, a strip of flesh was removed from the back and sides of the head which was then sewn up, leaving a scar from one side of the back of the head to the other." With Dr. Umar's new technique, this scarring is no longer so obvious and easily camouflaged with new hair growth.
Hair loss among youths on the rise

It seems the problem of hair loss is no longer only confined to middle-aged men.

Dermatologists said teenagers are also facing such problems and the numbers are rising - from an average of one to two cases a month, to weekly.

And the youngest patient is reportedly only six.

Stress is said to be a major cause.

Dermatologists said environmental factors could be a cause too, such as smoking or dieting, or even inappropriate hair care habits.

Hair loss treatment for teens is different from that for adults.

Doctors rarely use medicine; instead, they use counselling to help patients understand the importance of good health.

No hair equals no confidence for Singapore men

Singapore men are scared of losing their hair. Many say their hair gives them self-confidence, and they would be upset if their hair started to thin.

Singapore women also say they prefer men with a full head of hair, especially if the men are young. Older men, they say, should shave their heads completely, instead of opting for a comb-over if their hairlines recede.

According to a survey by Merck on male pattern hair loss, Singaporean men were the most sensitive to hair loss amongst Asia Pacific countries, with seven in ten Singaporean men thinking that thin hair would make them unattractive to the opposite sex.

Killer hair straightening products spark health warnings

Women have suffered hair loss and had difficulty breathing after using hair treatments containing up to 20 times the safe limit of the cancer-causing chemical formaldehyde, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission claims.

The consumer watchdog has warned hairdressers and consumers to check the levels of formaldehyde in hair straightening products following a spate of safety recalls in recent months.

"The ACCC has understood for some time formaldehyde has the potential to cause significant harm to consumers through dermatitis, hair loss and irritation of nose and eyes," ACCC deputy chair Peter Kell said.

"We've also understood that it has long been recognised as a substance that can lead to cancer as a result of prolonged use and significant exposure."

The permitted limit of formaldehyde as a preservative ingredient in products is 0.05 per cent but products labelled with warnings can have up to 0.2 per cent. "Some of the products we recalled had levels up to 10 per cent," Mr Kell said.

The ACCC has been inundated with complaints about the hair products.

BioRegenerative Sciences Releases Breakthrough Hair Regrowth Product for Women

BioRegenerative Sciences, Inc., (BRS), a privately owned stem cell therapeutics corporation headquartered in San Diego, CA, USA, announced today the release of Hair Stemulating Complex for Women (HSC), a unique, non-invasive and effective hair regrowth formulation.

This breakthrough product will benefit the estimated 87 million people in the US alone who suffer from hair loss. BRS’ clinical trials in both women and men have shown significant hair growth within 8 weeks following the daily application of the stem cell-based formulation.

Dr. Greg Maguire, CEO of BioRegenerative Sciences, said HSC is formulated using BRS’s core technology where the molecules from multiple stem cell types are used to mimic the natural healing and growth processes of the human body.
Our S2RM TechnologyTM nourishes the scalp’s stem cell niche where the hair and the hair’s pigmentation develop. Dr. Sidney Clevinger, Medical

Director at BRS added For the millions of men and women who struggle with their hair loss, the results of our HSC trial indicate the potential for a highly effective treatment option that stimulates growth of new hairs along with increasing the thickness of existing hairs, doing so with increased natural pigmentation of the hair."

Women Prefer 5% Minoxidil Foam for Alopecia

The 5% minoxidil foam approved for treatment of male androgenetic alopecia demonstrated significant clinical advantages over 2% minoxidil topical solution in the first head-to-head comparative trial conducted in women with the hair disorder.

The 5% minoxidil foam is approved as once-daily therapy in men only. The twice-daily 2% topical solution is the sole medication approved in the United States and Europe for female androgenetic alopecia. But in the randomized trial, the once-daily 5% foam earned higher marks from women in terms of cosmetic acceptance, convenience, and tolerability while demonstrating efficacy similar to that of the twice-daily 2% solution, Dr. Ulrike Blume-Peytavi reported at the World Congress of Dermatology.

She presented a 24-week, investigator-blinded, prospective, multicenter, randomized trial of 5% minoxidil foam once daily versus 2% minoxidil solution twice daily in 113 patients with female-pattern hair loss. The primary end point was the change from baseline to week 24 in terms of nonvellus target-area hair count as measured by Canfield hair matrix image analysis.
Hair Loss Consultation

All hair loss clinics exist for one reason and one reason only, to make money and the more the better. There is nothing wrong in this as that is what business is all about, making money. However this will mean that you are not getting independent advice as clinics have to sell to survive and they want you to buy their products or services and not just get their advise and go elsewhere to buy.

The reason for a consultation is seen by the customer and the clinic as two completely different purposes. The person going to the clinic is hoping for independent advice as to how best their hair problem should be handled. They put faith in the clinic and expect the consultant to have a lot more knowledge than them as regards to hair loss and the various cures and remedies to help prevent it. On the other hand the clinics see anyone that enters the clinic as someone to make money from.

The reason for a consultation is for the consultant to sell you something.

This is usually written into the first line of the company training manual. The objective of a consultation is to make a sale. Remember this statement whenever you enter a clinic. So you can see that you are not going to get independent advice if the consultant has to make a sale, and he will only recommend his own product, so his advice cannot be unbiased. From the minute you meet the consultant he will be manipulating you into saying yes to buying his product or services.

Soy and Hair Loss

French researchers compared the effects of a soyextract vs. genistein and daidzein (isoflavones devoid of their carbohydrate conjugates) and daidzin and puerarin (carbohydrate conjugated isoflavones; puerarin is present in abundance within kudzu [Pueraria lobata]) on different hormone elements and isolated human hair follicles.

'Activation' of the gene coding for an enzyme implicated in androgenetic hair loss (5alpha-reductase; the target of the drug finasteride, for androgenetic alopecia) was inhibited by both genistein and puerarin. Genetic activation of an enzyme involved in the conversion of testosterone into estrogens (aromatase) was increased by genistein and, to a lesser extent, daidzein.

The soy extract stimulated one of the estrogen receptors (b receptor) greater than genistein and daidzein, although the latter two were stimulatory themselves. Receptors for testosterone-like molecules (androgens) were decreased by genistein, and half as much by daidzein..
Perfect diet to prevent hair loss

Men are as touchy about hair as women are about their backsides. It's a sensitive subject, one that raises many concerns and results in paranoid treatments and extreme measures. However, until the problem begins, there is little thought put into nourishing hair other than the lather and rinse routine.

Before you start losing sleep over hair loss and book appointments with trichologists, take a closer look at what you're eating.

Chances are that even slight modifications made to what you eat by incorporating ingredients that aid hair growth and health will have a drastic impact.
While genes and lifestyle will always have the upper hand, here's what you could eat to help curb that receding hairline.

Carrots

It's not just the eyes, Vitamin A-rich carrots provide excellent nourishment for the scalp. A healthy scalp ensures shiny, well-conditioned hair that is strengthened and moisturised. An overall balanced diet of lean proteins, fruits, and vegetables, whole grains, legumes, fatty fish like the Indian salmon and low-fat dairy are great boosters for healthy hair.

£30 serum goes on sale to beat baldness

A new serum has gone on sale which experts believe could make hair transplants a thing of the past.

Nanogen's Serum VEGF: Growth Factor Solution contains the protein VEGF which promotes blood vessel growth in skin. Experts have shown that increasing the size of blood vessels in the scalp could be a solution for hair loss, as scientific studies have suggested that people with hair loss may have fewer blood vessels.

Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) discovered that by increasing the level of VEGF in mice, hair grew thicker and faster. The mouse hair follicles were individually bigger and collectively increased the total volume of hair by 70 per cent.

British scientists at Nanogen in London - one of the world's leading hair research organisations - have now developed the first growth factor complex (sh-VEGF) to stimulate hair follicle growth on human scalps.

Nanogen's Serum VEGF: Growth Factor Solution is available at Boots.com and is designed to improve hair growth and even re-awaken dormant hair follicles.

Elliot Isaacs, medical director and founder of Nanogen, comments: "It's taken our research team many years to reach this stage. We're really excited that we're able to bring this breakthrough product to hair loss sufferers."

Experts are heralding this advancement as the long-awaited 'next step' in hair regeneration and retention. Unlike previous breakthroughs, the complex is designed to be as effective on women as it is on men and is subject to an international patent protection.

Law Firm Now Offering Free and Confidential Propecia Impotence and Sexual Dysfunction Lawsuit Consultations

The Oklahoma law firm of Atkins & Markoff and its firm members who serve clients as defective drugs attorneys have made the decision to offer people who have used the medication known as Propecia an opportunity to obtain a free and confidential legal consultation regarding their potential legal rights and options regarding possible side effects of permanent sexual dysfunction and impotence.

These free initial legal consultations are meant to provide information and guidance to those who have used Propecia and who feel that they have suffered from alleged Propecia side effects. Consumers who believe they may have been harmed in this manner are encouraged to contact the firm immediately to schedule this free initial consultation.

Propecia is a medication that's manufactured by Merck & Co. that is intended to be used to treat and to potentially reverse the progression of male pattern baldness, otherwise known as MPB. Propecia is available via prescription and is to be used only by men who are experiencing male pattern hair loss that is mild to moderate in nature. In addition, Propecia is supposed to be prescribed for men whose hair loss is occurring either on the vertex, which is the top of the head and/or on the anterior mid-scalp area, which is the middle-front of the head.

The official Propecia Web site warns against the potential for Propecia side effects to develop, specifically stating that a "small number of men had sexual side effects, with each occurring in less than 2% of men. These include less desire for sex, difficulty in achieving an erection, and a decrease in the amount of semen. These side effects went away in men who stopped taking Propecia because of them. In addition, these side effects decreased to 0.3% of men or less by the fifth year of treatment."

Does Your Aesthetician Hold the Key to Healthy Hair?

Millions of Americans battle some form of hair loss, spending upwards of $3.5 million annually on treatment solutions that oftentimes are ineffective. Though hair loss is commonly due to genetics, it can also stem from unhealthy or aged scalp conditions. Research recently conducted by Rhonda Allison, founder and CEO of Rhonda Allison Cosmeceuticals, found many of the cosmeceutical ingredients used to maintain skin health, produce the same rejuvenating benefits when applied to the scalp and hair.

The scalp ages much like the rest of the body's skin. It loses tone and elasticity, and cell production declines. As the scalp ages, the hair weakens. It is part of the lifecycle of the hair follicle, but that lifespan can be extended when the same methods and ingredients for skin care are applied to the scalp.

"Through research, we now know that many of the ingredients traditionally used in aesthetic treatments also have the power to inhibit the progression of hair damage and loss," Allison said. "Using cosmeceutical-grade peptides, amino acids, antioxidants, and organic stem cell technology we can stimulate the mitochondria, support keratin, fight free radicals, and maintain a healthy hair cycle."

In healthy conditions hair strands go through three stages the anagen (active growth) phase, catagen (transition/end of active growth) stage, and the telogen (resting) phase. The hair falls out and is usually replaced by new hair. The cycle continues like clockwork, but as the scalp ages or is affected by a disorder or disease, the cycle can be disrupted.

Clinical severity does not reliably predict quality of life in women with androgenic alopecia

BACKGROUND:

Hair loss may significantly impact an individual's self-image, and studies indicate that patients with both clinically apparent and clinically imperceptible hair loss may have significantly decreased quality of life (QoL). Moreover, clinical severity of hair loss does not necessarily predict impact on QoL.
OBJECTIVE:

The aim of this study was to assess QoL in patients (n = 104) with alopecia areata, telogen effluvium, and androgenic alopecia, and to compare QoL with hair loss severity (HLS) as independently rated by both patient and dermatologist.
New Research Provides Clues on Why Hair Turns Gray

A new study by researchers at NYU Langone Medical Center has shown that, for the first time, Wnt signaling, already known to control many biological processes, between hair follicles and melanocyte stem cells can dictate hair pigmentation.

The study was published in the June 11, 2011 issue of the journal Cell.

The research was led by Mayumi Ito, PhD, assistant professor in the Ronald O. Pereleman Department of Dermatology at NYU Langone. We have known for decades that hair follicle stem cells and pigment-producing melanocycte cells collaborate to produce colored hair, but the underlying reasons were unknown, said Dr. Ito.

We discovered Wnt signaling is essential for coordinated actions of these two stem cell lineages and critical for hair pigmentation. The study suggests the manipulation of Wnt signaling may be a novel strategy for targeting pigmentation such as graying hair. The research study also illustrates a model for tissue regeneration.

Merck Redesigns Drug Label for Propecia

Federal regulators have signed off on a redesign for the labels of a number of Merck drugs, including Zocor, Propecia, Januvia and a dozen other drugs, to improve readability and reduce the risk of medication mistakes and prescription errors.

The FDA announced its approval for a new standardized format last week, after Merck proposed a revisions to the container labels for 16 solid oral drug products. The new labels are designed to provide better information to help differentiate the products and strengths of the various drugs.

The new label designs will affect the following Merck drugs: Cozaar, Crixivan, Hyzaar, Isentress, Janumet, Januvia, Mevacor, Noroxin, Prinivil, Prinizide, Propecia, Proscar, Singulair, Zocor, and Zolinza. The labels were designed using a scientific approach and then had to be approved by eight different divisions of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER).
Device Granted FDA Clearance to Treat Female Pattern Hair Loss

For the first time in over twenty years, a new home-use treatment for female hair loss is available. Lexington Intl, LLC, is excited to announce they have received historic and groundbreaking FDA Clearance for marketing for the HairMax LaserComb® Lux 9 to treat female hair loss and promote hair growth.

Included as a key part of the submission was a multi-center clinical study proving the efficacy and safety of the HairMax.
Hair loss amongst women is a growing concern, says Dr. Matt Leavitt, Medical Advisor to Lexington. In the past, women had only one FDA Approved drug ingredient to treat their hair loss. Now they have a clinically proven viable alternative. Upon review of Lexington’s extensive clinical studies on female hair loss, the FDA has granted Clearance to this exciting new treatment option. I believe the HairMax will be able to offer help to the millions of women suffering from hair loss.

The last hair loss treatment for women to be approved by the FDA was minoxidil, which came to market for females in 1988. The HairMax is now the first non-drug, home-use OTC medical device cleared to treat the estimated 80 million men and women suffering from hereditary hair loss.

Ryan Giggs hair loss

Ryan Giggs's cheating with two mistresses put him under so much pressure his hair began to fall out, The Sun can reveal.

The married soccer star blew a fortune on expensive lawyers in a failed bid to keep his adultery quiet - and another £30,000 to stop himself going bald.

And £14,000 of the bill was for a laser gadget Giggs bought so he could treat himself.

The winger, 37, had already had treatment for hair loss, like his Manchester United team-mate Wayne Rooney.

But juggling football, his marriage to wife Stacey, being a dad to their two children - plus secret romps with Big Brother star Imogen Thomas AND his brother's wife Natasha Giggs - took a toll on him.

The Welsh winger feared his regrown thatch was disappearing and this March he began new treatment. It included laser sessions at a clinic, special shampoos and lotions.

Wayne Rooney today showed off the early results of his hair transplant by posting a picture on his Twitter feed.

The 25-year-old had treatment on his prematurely balding head last week at a Harley Street clinic - at an estimated cost of £12,000.

He commented: "Hi all there's my head. It will take a few months to grow. Still a bit bloody too. But that's all normal."

The England striker had taken stick off Manchester United team mate Michael Owen over his Twitter profile pic, and Cristiano Ronaldo nicknamed him Bobby Charlton.

And Red Devils colleague Rio Ferdinand, who tweets as RioFerdy5, was quick to comment on the new look.

He joked: "@WayneRooney looks like you got a shape up, looks decent. I was expecting a full head a hair + extensions etc!?

"Can't wait to see you in the mirror after training styling your locks with loads a products ala ronaldo!"

Could Hair Loss at 20 Signal Higher Prostate Cancer Risk?

Men with prostate cancer may be twice as likely to have started showing signs of male pattern baldness at the age of 20 than those without prostate cancer, a new French study suggests.

Men who start losing their hair in their 30s or 40s do not appear to face a similar boost in prostate cancer risk. And those whose hair loss starts in their 20s do not face a higher risk of developing the cancer at an early age or of developing more aggressive tumors, the research team noted.

Whether or not men who experience youthful hair loss may benefit from prostate cancer screening is yet to be determined, the study authors added.

Hair loss Researchers May Have Accidentally Discovered a Solution

It has been long known that stress plays a part not just in the graying of hair but in hair loss as well. Over the years, numerous hair-restoration remedies have emerged, ranging from hucksters' "miracle solvents" to legitimate medications such as minoxidil.

But even the best of these have shown limited effectiveness.

Now, a team led by researchers from UCLA and the Veterans Administration that was investigating how stress affects gastrointestinal function may have found a chemical compound that induces hair growth by blocking a stress-related hormone associated with hair loss -- entirely by accident.

<img width="468" height="60" alt="Nanogen for hair loss" ="" src="http://www.stophairlossnow.co.uk/Nanogen_Banner(468x60).gif">

Even Celebrities Have A Bad Hair (Loss) Day

There is a lot of media at the moment around hair transplantation and what men can do if they are going a bit thin, with more and more celebrities accepting, talking about or hiding their hair loss problems and solutions.

Although hair loss in men is one of the most widely accepted forms of hair loss and most common – it is still a problem that causes major anxiety for most men (although the majority wont let on it bothers them!). A receding hairline or the arrival of a bald patch can have a dramatic effect on men's confidence and self-image. It’s something most men secretly 'fear' but hope will never actually occur.

After all, thinning hair and baldness is something that kids use to identify the elderly, despite the fact that the process can begin before 20 years of age!
A good head of hair is associated with youth, virility and attractiveness, so when hair loss occurs it can come as something of a shock.

Hair loss lawsuit

A Connecticut law firm has filed a lawsuit against pharmaceutical manufacturer Merck & Co. on behalf of men who have taken Propecia, a prescription drug that combats hair loss but, its critics say, can also cause severe side effects such as sexual dysfunction and mental impairment.

Attorney Edward Jazlowiecki of Bristol has joined two other firms, in New Jersey and New York, in filing the suit, which alleges that Merck has failed to fully disclose the serious side effects of Propecia and failed to adjust its warnings in the American market even after European regulators forced the company to carry a stronger warning label.
