Proscar

Finasteride was originally used for the treatment and reduction of benign prostatic hyperplasia and marketed under the trade name Proscar by Merck and Co.

On December 22 1997, 1mg of Oral finasteride was approved by the FDA as a treatment for Male Pattern Baldness.
Proscar is 5 mgs of Oral finasteride, whereas Propecia is 1 mg of oral finasteride which is taken daily for the treatment of Male Pattern Baldness. While Proscar is prescribed mainly for the treatment of enlarged prostrates, cost conscious consumers purchase Proscar and divide the 5mg tablet into quarters thereby enjoying the benefits of Propecia at 1/4 of the cost.
