ISHRS Online Survey Challenges Public to Identify Hair Transplant Patients

June 2008

The International Society of Hair Restoration, a nonprofit medical association dedicated to advancing hair loss restoration, is challenging the public to identify hair transplant patients from a series of photos.

The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) is inviting the public to take the Hair Transplant Challenge, a new online survey designed to test one's ability to correctly identify hair transplant patients from fake patients.

The survey also tests public knowledge on hair loss and hair restoration procedures. The survey will be available from June 1, 2008, until January 1, 2009.

"Today's hair restoration surgery has really evolved because of new techniques and training," said Bessam K. Farjo, MD, president of the ISHRS. "The procedure is safe, and results are permanent, natural-looking and virtually undetectable. This survey should prove that detecting a modern day hair transplant is not as easy as it would appear."

During a typical hair transplant procedure, hair restoration physicians split tiny grafts from the patient's existing hair and plant them into the scalp in thin and bald areas while the patient remains awake.

Hair grows in gradually and is expected to be fully restored in six to 12 months. Dr. Farjo added that a combination of medical and surgical therapies is often the best option for treat thinning hair and to limit future hair loss.

To educate the public on the causes and available solutions for hair loss, the ISHRS Web site provides patients with the resources to make informed medical decisions and locate a hair restoration physician in their area.
