Southwest Skin and Cancer Institute Recognizes New Trends in Men’s Cosmetic Procedures

Dr. Robin Fleck, founder and medical director of Southwest Skin and Cancer Institute offers men numerous cosmetic options to achieve a more youthful look. In the past month, men are jumping on the cosmetic bandwagon.

They are becoming increasingly concerned with their appearance and like women, their goal is to achieve and maintain a youthful appearance. We are seeing a growing trend for men to be using make-up, cosmetic fillers and Botox.

They realize that appearing youthful gives them more confidence, better job prospects and social standing. Even though this interest in cosmetics has skyrocketed, men would like to remain discrete with their new secret weapon, in attempts to preserve their masculinity, but it is clear, men today are joining women in the fight against aging.

The use of make-up is beginning to be accepted among men as a tool for them to look and feel more youthful. Make-up’s appeal to men has exponentially increased in the past decade. According to NBC News, “$4.8 billion was spent on men’s grooming products in 2009 in the US. In 1997, that figure was about half, at about $2.4 billion.”

Men use make-up more for the purpose of touch-up rather than glam up. For example, they use concealer to cover up dark circles, which are attributed to thin skin around the eyes, lack of sleep and allergies. Dark circles are also the result of loss of soft tissue volume in the mid-cheek which can be easily corrected with injections of cosmetic dermal fillers such as Radiesse.

Another problem that men face is the battle against acne. Acne is a skin disease that can cause blackheads, oily skin and pimples. Acne can also lead to scarring. The use of fractional laser resurfacing is highly effective at treating acne scars. To prevent the recurrence of acne, a proper diet must be maintained and the use of prescription retinoid creams are most effective.

Most men are concerned with the condition of their hair. Certain conditions, like dandruff and oily hair, detract from the overall appearance and can be treated successfully by a board-certified dermatologist. The most common scalp condition which men face is thinning hair. Men generally feel more self-conscious after balding occurs. There are many successful therapies for this problem including laser hair restoration, platelet-rich plasma therapy, hair transplantation and medications.

Men have been drawn to injectables such as Botox and its new alternative, Xeomin. Time magazine’s article entitled “Boytox: Botox for Men”, reports that men are primarily using Botox to treat frown lines and forehead wrinkles. These cosmetic procedures are being enjoyed by men as much as women because they offer quick, painless results.

Similarly, men are using cosmetic dermal fillers, like Radiesse, to lift sunken cheeks without surgical cost or downtime. Radiesse is very versatile and can be used to rejuvenate hands, cheekbones and nose.
