Pro Bono Hair Transplant Means Much More Than Just Hair for Brain Tumor Survivor

Just nine years ago, Carlos Cabrera’s life was dramatically changed when he was diagnosed with a rare brain tumor called ganglioglioma.

He survived, but was left with visible scarring that reminded him daily of the trauma he had experienced.

Just nine months ago, Cabrera was able to get the fresh start for his appearance by undergoing a pro bono hair transplant from Bay area hair restoration surgeon Dr. Sara Wasserbauer.

The hair transplant restored the areas of his scalp that had previously stopped growing hair as a result of the radiation, surgery and subsequent scarring he endured during his cancer battle. Today, Cabrera’s before and after photos say it all and he finally feels like he can move forward without feeling self-conscious about his appearance and the physical reminders of his long and arduous health scare.

Cabrera’s hair transplant surgery was broadcast live on TheBaldTruth.com last July. Dr. Wasserbauer performed a follicular unit extraction (FUE) hair transplant on Cabrera which involved taking individual grafts from areas of his scalp that had healthy hair follicles and transplanting the follicles to the areas in the back of his scalp that had stopped growing hair.

Dr. Wasserbauer was able to even out the distribution of hair so that the back of Cabrera’s head looked more natural and signs of his surgery and radiation were less noticeable.

“When we first met Carlos and heard his story we knew we could help,” said Dr. Wasserbauer. “We know how difficult it was for Carlos to move on with his life when he saw the scars and hair changes from his brain tumor treatments every time he looked in the mirror. Since the hair transplant, we’ve seen a pretty dramatic boost in his confidence. Seeing the difference this has made for Carlos in his life has been a real pleasure for us and we are so pleased to have been able to give him the gift of hair restoration.”

Dr. Sara Wasserbauer is a California-based hair transplant surgeon. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery in the San Francisco Bay area, and has performed successful hair transplant surgery on thousands of people with dramatic, natural-looking results. Dr. Wasserbauer has been featured on the national television program, The Doctors and several national publications and websites.
