No shave November for six Flyers players
They will grow mustaches to raise awareness for cancer
Nov 2010
Last week, Flyers left wing Scott Hartnell cut his hair and donated
it to Locks of Love, which provides hairpieces to financially
disadvantaged children suffering from long-term medical hair loss.
This month, Hartnell and a handful of teammates will grow mustaches
to raise awareness of prostate cancer.
Forwards Jody Shelley and Claude Giroux came up with the idea, which
originated in Melbourne, Australia, in 2004 when 432 men grew
mustaches and raised $55,000 for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of
Australia.
Now known as "Movember," the moustache for a cause has expanded to
the U.S., United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, Ireland, Spain, South
Africa, the Netherlands and Finland.
Last year, more than a million donors raised $42 million worldwide
for prostate cancer treatment and research.
At last count, six Flyers have agreed to join Shelley and Giroux --
Hartnell, Mike Richards, Dan Carcillo, Ville Leino, Darroll Powe and
James van Riemsdyk.
"The guys here are jumping on board,'' Shelley said. "I know
Carcillo loves to grow his moustache. Some guys were hesitant, but
when we realized it was for a good cause, it's kind of a fun thing
to do. It makes my nose look smaller."
The Flyers will be asking fans to visit their website to vote for
their favorite mustaches and make donations.
"If it's for a good cause and a lot of guys are doing it, I think it
will be good," Leino said. "I just don't want it to be a publicity
stunt or anything like that."
