Men worry about moobs noses and hair loss

Cosmetic surgery seems to be gaining appeal among men.

May 2010

When it comes to keeping up appearances, men fret most about developing bald patches and ending up with a combover, according to a survey carried out for a TV programme.

The latest episode of chat show MyFaceMyBody explores men’s top concerns about their looks, those who influence their appearance and why they would consider cosmetic surgery.

Fear of going bald appears to be the biggest worry, with four out of five men saying it concerns them, and more than a quarter (27%) saying they would consider having surgical treatment such as a hair transplant. A third of men said they would shave off all their hair if they started developing bald patches.

Seeing Phil Collins in the mirror

The programme hears from Gladiator star Warren ‘Ace’ Furman - ex boyfriend of model Katie Price - who discusses his recent hair transplant. In a statement, ‘Ace’ says, “I had a hair transplant and am thrilled with the results, I look ten years younger. Initially I wasn’t that bothered about my hair, but I was only 35 when I looked in the mirror and saw Phil Collins staring back at me.”

The gladiator’s first move was to shave off all his remaining hair. However, he tells the programme his girlfriend just thought he had developed a disease. “My head was too big and I looked like an escaped convict!” he says.

It seems that men are not as apathetic about looking good as many people might think, with almost three quarters of men (72%) saying it was important to look after their appearance. 46% of men admitted that their wives and girlfriends had the most influence on how they looked, with 34% saying they did it just for their own satisfaction and 19% saying they tried to copy celebrities.

Barack Obama: Role model

So which celebrities have the most influence? Pirates of the Caribbean actor Johnny Depp and comedian Russell Brand lead the pack, with US president Barack Obama also showing up as a style role model.

Earlier this year the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) reported seeing a substantial rise in the number of men opting for cosmetic surgery. During 2009, procedures on men rose by 21%, with male breast reduction operations - for breast enlargement called gynaecomastia - soaring by 80%.

Moobs

The latest poll shows the popularity of ‘moob jobs’ continuing. The top five surgical procedures which men would consider are:

Nose Surgery

Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery)

Liposuction

Breast reduction

Hair transplant

The list reads remarkably like the figures released by BAAPS. Its top five for men in 2005 were:

Nose jobs (rhinoplasty) - 877 (up 26%)

Blepharoplasty - 616 (up 1%)

Breast reduction - 581 (up 80%)

Otoplasty (ear pinning and reshaping) - 542 (up 7%)

Liposuction - 499 (up 4%)
