According to the American Academy of Dermatology, hair loss – or alopecia as it is medically referred to – is a condition that affects a combined 80 million men and women in the U.S.

At Leonard Transplants Associates, the hair restoration surgeon says one of the unique advantages of offering the ARTAS® Robotic System is its methodology to restore hair without the evidence of a visible, linear scar.

“Any person losing his or her hair is a good candidate for the ARTAS® procedure, particularly those who wish to wear their hair really short in the back of the head,” says Dr. Leonard. “If a person wants his or her hair short, or shaved down closely, we do the follicular unit extraction, called FUE technique.

The ARTAS® device is one of the tools I utilize to harvest follicular units, which are groupings of hairs that grow on the scalp.”

Equipped with the ARTAS® Robotic System’s sophisticated digital visualization and precision robotics, Dr. Leonard explains that he first begins the procedure by shaving the back of the patient’s head and numbing the area. “Under my supervision, the robotic arm actually aligns to the follicular units in the back of the head,” he says. “After everything is calculated and calibrated, a little punch comes forth and actually makes a hole around the follicular unit, which is harvested and then transplanted on the top of the head.

These grafts are as small as .7mm – 1mm. They’re very, very tiny so when they’re extracted from the back of the head, tiny little holes are left, which heal into even tinier little spots that are completely hidden even if a person has hair [that’s] very short.”

Generally, one surgical session takes anywhere from five to eight hours, notes Dr. Leonard.

Patients are also given pre-and post-operative instructions, and are seen within a one to two week period following their procedure.

Although the length of the procedure is long, the hair loss treatment specialist says it is well worth the time, as patients are typically able to achieve natural and superior results with state-of-the-art technology. “It’s really the latest opportunity we have to provide follicular unit extraction to patients,” says Dr. Leonard. “Using this really high-tech device (that still has my supervision), we obtain the proper grafts to transplant on the top to have an aesthetically pleasing result.”

Treating hair loss can pose a challenge for men and women, as it is an ongoing condition, explains Dr. Leonard. “Male and female pattern baldness are progressive,” he says. “I always tell patients if they want to have the area that we do once more dense, thicker, they have to come in the future sometime. Whether it’s a year later or 16 years later, it just depends upon how little hair is enough for a patient to be satisfied.”

Dr. Leonard also states that he considers preventing future hair loss to be just as important as treatment methodology. “One of the very important things that I believe in my practice is prevention,” he says. “I highly recommend Propecia® and Rogaine® foam, and laser hair loss therapy to stabilize the progression of non-transplanted hair so that we don’t have to keep catching up and catching up to further loss.”
